Embracing the Seasons of Motherhood

For Everything, There Is a Season

For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven. — Ecclesiastes 3:1

The seasons are changing. Spring is officially here, and with it, I can feel my mood lifting. I was beyond ready for winter to end—it was bitterly cold and full of sick days for my family and me. Still, I’m grateful to live in a place where I get to experience all four seasons because it helps me appreciate each one a little more. Every season has something unique to offer, and life, especially motherhood, is like that too.

In motherhood, there will be seasons we cherish and seasons we struggle through. Whether we are in a period of blooming growth or painful shedding, each stage plays a necessary role in shaping our journey.

The Seasons of Motherhood

Pregnancy is a season; it does not last forever. For some, it’s an enjoyable time filled with energy and excitement. If that’s you, soak it all in. For others, it’s uncomfortable and challenging. If that’s you, take heart—your discomfort will pass.

The newborn stage is a season; it will end. You will sleep again. Raising small children is a season. Eventually, you will regain more freedom and flexibility in your life.

Parenting teenagers is a season; soon enough, your children will become adults and leave home. Each stage comes with its own set of joys and challenges. As parents, life is hectic, and there are many demands on our time. If we aren't present, time will pass and we'll feel like we missed it.

Being Present in the Hard and Beautiful Moments

I’m not saying you should ignore your struggles. Motherhood is hard, and that is real. However, practicing gratitude and mindfulness allows you to find beauty even in the small, seemingly mundane moments. When you look back, those are the moments that you will cherish most. You don't have to feel grateful for every moment, because some things are just hard and unpleasant, but with gratitude, you can gain wisdom from the tough moments and enjoy the beautiful ones.

Gratitude and mindfulness are more than just feel-good practices—they're powerful tools for mental health. When we pause to notice what we’re thankful for, even in a chaotic or exhausting moment, a powerful mindset shift occurs. Mindfulness helps us slow down and tune in, rather than racing through the day on autopilot. Together, these practices can reduce stress, ease anxiety, and help us feel more grounded and resilient, especially during the tougher seasons of motherhood.

I like to practice gratitude and mindfulness through prayer and yoga. Prayer helps me connect with God and center my thoughts, while yoga gives me a space to breathe deeply and move with intention. Both have become anchors that bring me back to the present when life feels overwhelming.

Letting Go of “Doing It All”

Since becoming a parent, you probably can’t move as fast or accomplish as much as you once did. You can’t do everything all at once, and that’s okay. Ask yourself, what does success look like in this season? Maybe this month you choose to prioritize your work project over social outings. Next month, you might be able to make time for that friend you’ve been meaning to catch up with.

One helpful way to release the pressure of doing everything at once is to set small weekly or monthly goals. Adjusting your mindset to prioritize specific things at different times can be a game-changer. One week you might focus on rest and family, and the next week you carve out space for creativity or adventure. Creating intentional rhythms makes it easier to release the guilt of not doing it all. This approach brings more balance, clarity, and peace into your days, and helps you feel more in control and less overwhelmed.

Embracing the Changing Seasons

When things are hard, hang in there. Life won’t always look like this. It will change. When things are good, be present and soak it up. That, too, will change. Embrace each season for what it is, and trust that every moment is shaping your beautiful life.
